Islamabad, Pakistan – In a bid to optimize energy consumption and reduce the financial burden on consumers, the federal government has initiated discussions on introducing seasonal energy tariffs.

According to sources, the proposed tariff structure would replace fixed rates with seasonal ones, adjusting prices according to demand fluctuations. This move aims to incentivize electricity usage during winter months when demand is lower, by offering relatively lower rates.

Currently, consumers bear the brunt of capacity payments during winter, when electricity demand drops to 10,000 megawatts from a peak of 25,000 megawatts in summer. The new tariff regime seeks to address this issue by promoting gas usage during summer months with lower tariffs.

The federal cabinet will grant final approval for the introduction of seasonal energy tariffs. Once approved, the new tariff structure is expected to be implemented, marking a significant shift in Pakistan’s energy pricing mechanism.

This development comes as the government continues to explore innovative solutions to address the country’s energy challenges and provide relief to consumers.
