Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission Cracks Down on Non-Compliant Institutions
Islamabad, Pakistan – The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has issued a stern warning to students and parents to avoid enrolling in two-year undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as they are no longer recognized.
Phased Out Programs
HEC had previously phased out these programs, with deadlines for BA/BSc and MA/MSc programs ending in 2019 and June 30, 2022, respectively. Despite this, some institutions continued to admit students to these programs, putting their degrees at risk of not being recognized or attested by HEC.

Consequences of Non-Compliance
The commission has reminded students, parents, and institutions that it has the authority to regulate higher education, including setting standards and determining priorities. HEC is responsible for ensuring quality education and has cautioned against pursuing degrees that may not be valid. Degrees obtained from non-compliant programs will not be recognized, and students are advised to make informed decisions when choosing their academic path.
HEC’s Role in Regulating Higher Education
As per its Ordinance, HEC has the authority to establish conditions for the opening and operation of higher education institutions, including those not affiliated with the State educational system. HEC is also responsible for formulating policies, setting standards, and determining priorities in various areas related to institutional regulations, guidelines, and rules to improve the quality of education.
By issuing this warning, HEC aims to protect students from pursuing invalid degrees and ensure that higher education institutions comply with the commission’s regulations.
