Peshawar High Court verdict: On Tuesday, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) took a significant step by suspending the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) declaration of the PTI’s intra-party polls as unconstitutional and the subsequent revocation of the party’s distinctive ‘bat’ election symbol. Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel delivered the verdict after reserving his order on a PTI petition challenging the ECP decision.
According to the court order, the general elections were slated for February 8, and the deadline for the allocation of election symbols was January 13. The court instructed the issuance of notices to all respondents for January 9 and temporarily halted the ECP’s decision from December 22. Additionally, the court mandated the ECP to publish the PTI’s certificate on the commission’s website and reinstate the party’s election symbol.

The urgency was emphasized, acknowledging that the political party had been stripped of its symbol. This implies that individuals from the general public who intended to vote for the petitioners’ party were deprived of their right to vote according to their preference.
