Islamabad, December 18, 2023:

In a decisive move aimed at clearing the path for the upcoming February 8 elections, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday that objections against constituency delimitations could not be raised once the election schedule was released. The three-member apex court bench, led by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and including Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah, issued this order in response to a plea filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ECP’s petition contested alterations made by the Balochistan High Court to two constituencies in Zhob and Shirani. The Supreme Court, however, set aside the BHC’s decision, stating that challenges to constituencies become invalid after the election schedule release.

During the hearing, Justice Minallah emphasized the separation of authorities, questioning the court’s right to intervene in matters under the jurisdiction of the election commission. Justice Shah highlighted that electoral processes should not be disrupted for individual relief, stating, “We have to draw a line and set a limit in this regard.”

Justice Masood expressed his perplexity at the desire to delay elections, asserting, “Let polls take place.”

This ruling follows the ECP’s appeal, ensuring that the election process remains on track for the scheduled date.

Balochistan Election Commission Ensures Fair Polls

Quetta, December 18, 2023:

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision, Balochistan Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chohan assured that all resources would be mobilized to conduct peaceful, free, fair, and transparent elections in the province. Acknowledging the challenges of ensuring peace in Balochistan, Chohan pledged effective fulfillment of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s responsibilities.

Chohan stated that security personnel, including the army if necessary, would be deployed at polling stations. He emphasized equal treatment for all political parties and candidates, ensuring a level playing field. Expressing hope in the role of law enforcement agencies, Chohan anticipated improvements in Balochistan’s security situation.

This development comes after the Supreme Court’s intervention, ensuring the timely release of the election schedule and reaffirming its commitment to a transparent and fair electoral process.
