Early Life: The Sting of Caste

• Born into an "untouchable" Mahar family in 1891, Ambedkar faced humiliation from childhood. In school, he was made to sit outside the classroom and drink water from a separate pot.
• Turning point: His father, a soldier, instilled in him the value of education. Despite poverty, Ambedkar excelled, earning a scholarship to study at Columbia University.

Education: Forging a Weapon

• At Columbia (1913-1916), he studied under John Dewey and absorbed ideas of democracy, liberty, and social equality. He earned multiple doctorates in economics and law.
• Key insight: He realized that caste was not just a social evil but a structural system of oppression that required constitutional remedies.

The Great Depression & Round Table Conferences

• In 1930-32, Ambedkar represented the depressed classes at the Round Table Conferences in London. He clashed with Gandhi over separate electorates for Dalits.
• Poona Pact (1932): Gandhi's fast forced Ambedkar to compromise, but he secured reserved seats—a bittersweet victory that gave political representation but not full autonomy.

Architect of the Constitution

• As Chairman of the Drafting Committee (1947-1949), Ambedkar steered the Constituent Assembly through debates on fundamental rights, federalism, and social justice.
• His masterstroke: Article 17 abolished untouchability; Article 15 prohibited discrimination; and affirmative action policies were embedded to uplift backward classes.

Setback: Political Isolation

• After independence, Ambedkar lost his Lok Sabha seat in 1952. He faced opposition from both Congress and Hindu traditionalists. His wife Ramabai's death in 1935 had left him emotionally shattered.
• Personal toll: He wrote, "I was a lonely man... my life was a series of disappointments."

Conversion to Buddhism

• On October 14, 1956, in Nagpur, Ambedkar converted to Buddhism along with 500,000 followers. He rejected Hinduism as inherently unequal.
• Symbolic act: He called it "the greatest day of my life"—a final break from caste hierarchy.

Legacy: The Unfinished Revolution

• Ambedkar died on December 6, 1956, just weeks after his conversion. His last manuscript, The Buddha and His Dhamma, was published posthumously.
• Enduring impact: Today, his image adorns every Indian currency note; his ideas inspire Dalit movements globally. But caste violence persists, making his vision still a work in progress.
