• Emotional trigger: Invited to the Nanda court, King Dhana Nanda humiliated him for his plain appearance. Chanakya vowed to dethrone the Nanda dynasty.
• Action: Escaped, met young Chandragupta Maurya, and began training him.

The Arthashastra: A Manual of Power

• Written after Chanakya helped Chandragupta overthrow the Nandas.
• Content: 15 books covering economics, politics, military strategy, and espionage.
• Key idea: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" – realpolitik centuries before Machiavelli.

Political Struggles

• Faced opposition from Nanda loyalists and rival kingdoms.
• Used spies and diplomacy to weaken enemies, including poisoning food to eliminate threats.
• Personal sacrifice: Lived frugally, never sought wealth, focused on empire-building.

Emotional End Phase

• Retired after Chandragupta's abdication, possibly to a forest hermitage.
• Legend says he performed a ritual fast unto death (sallekhana) after foreseeing his end.
• Legacy: His ideas influenced Indian statecraft for centuries and remain studied globally.
