โFrom a small village to Olympic gold: Neeraj Chopra redefined India's athletics potential.โ
Neeraj Chopra is India's first Olympic gold medalist in track and field, winning the javelin throw at Tokyo 2020. Born in Khandra, Haryana, he overcame limited facilities and injuries to become world champion and a national icon.
Neeraj Chopra was born on December 24, 1997, in Khandra, a small village in Haryana. His father was a farmer, and the family had no athletic background. As a chubby child, he was sent to a local gym to lose weight, where a coach spotted his throwing talent.
> "I saw the London Olympics on TV and thought: I want to do that."
At 14, Neeraj decided to take up javelin seriously. He started training at the Panchkula sports hostel, often running 5 km to the ground because he had no transport.
In 2016, Neeraj threw 86.48m at the World U20 Championships in Poland, setting a world junior record. This put him on the global map and earned him a scholarship to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme.
On August 7, 2021, Neeraj threw 87.58m to win gold. His reactionโa quiet fist pump and a tearโcaptured India's 100-year wait for an Olympic athletics medal. The throw wasn't his best, but it was enough.
After Tokyo, Neeraj faced pressure to repeat success. In 2023, he won gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a throw of 88.17m, becoming the first Indian to achieve that feat.
Neeraj's impact goes beyond medals. He inspired a generation of Indian throwers and changed the perception that Indians can't excel in field events. He continues to train for Paris 2024, aiming to defend his title.
