Early Life & Education

• Born into privilege: Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta to a wealthy Brahmo family, the youngest of 13 children. His father, Debendranath, was a religious reformer.
• Reluctant student: He hated formal schooling and was mostly educated at home by tutors. At 11, he accompanied his father on a months-long tour of the Himalayas—a trip that sparked his love for nature.
• First poem at 8: He published his first poem under a pseudonym at age 16, and his first collection of poems, Kabi Kahini, came out in 1878.

Breakthrough: The Nobel Moment

• 1912: A turning point in London: Tagore traveled to England with his son. On the voyage, he translated a selection of his Bengali poems into English, creating Gitanjali. The manuscript impressed poet W.B. Yeats, who wrote the introduction.
• 1913: Nobel Prize in Literature: He became the first non-European laureate. The award brought him global fame and a £8,000 prize, which he donated to his school in Santiniketan.

Institution-Building & Setbacks

• 1901: Founding Santiniketan: He started a school in rural Bengal with just five students, based on his vision of education in harmony with nature. It later became Visva-Bharati University.
• 1915: Knighthood & renunciation: He was knighted in 1915 but renounced the title in 1919 after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, as a protest against British atrocities.
• 1930s: Painting career: He took up painting at age 67, producing thousands of works that were exhibited worldwide.

Emotional End Phase

• 1941: Final days: Tagore died on August 7, 1941, in Calcutta. His last poem, written weeks before, reflects on his life's journey: "I have spent my days in stringing and unstringing my instrument."
• Legacy: His songs (Rabindra Sangeet) are cultural treasures; his poems inspired India's and Bangladesh's national anthems. He remains a symbol of Bengali renaissance and global humanism.
