Sunlight that reaches us carries two ultraviolet bands. UVA makes up most of it and is fairly steady all day, all year. For Indian skin, melanin is a real but partial shield: it scatters some UV, so burns are less common than in fair skin, but pigment problems like tanning and melasma are more common and stubborn. UV exposure does not just sit quietly either; cumulative damage to skin-cell DNA is what slowly raises the risk of skin cancers over a lifetime.

Myth 1 — Brown skin is dark enough, it doesn't need sunscreen.
Melanin gives some protection, roughly like a low SPF — helpful, but nowhere near full. Indian skin still tans, pigments and ages from UV, and melasma and dark spots are among the most common skin complaints here. Some protection is not the same as enough protection.
Myth 2 — Sunscreen is only for the beach or peak summer.

Myth 3 — A higher SPF lasts all day, so I never reapply.
No SPF, however high, keeps working after it sweats or rubs off. SPF 30 versus 50 is a small difference in blocking; reapplying every 2–3 hours outdoors matters far more than chasing a big number.
Myth 4 — Sunscreen blocks all vitamin D and weakens bones.
In real life people rarely apply perfectly or constantly, and studies show daily sunscreen users usually keep healthy vitamin D. Short sensible sun, diet, and a doctor-advised supplement cover the rest.
Myth 5 — The SPF in my make-up or moisturiser is enough.
The thin layer of a tinted cream or foundation rarely gives the labelled SPF, because you apply far too little. Treat make-up SPF as a small bonus, not your main shield.
