The government of Pakistan has made significant progress in installing a firewall to regulate digital media. According to details, the government has taken a big step towards regulating over-the-top (OTT) services.
Framework for Regulating OTT Services
The framework for regulating OTT services has been finalized after consultation with stakeholders. The OTT regulatory framework will be approved by the authority and then by the federal cabinet.

Categories of Services Under the New Framework
Under the new framework, various forums including WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook Messenger, IMO, and Viber will need to obtain licenses and authorization. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, online gaming, and e-commerce will also be regulated under the new framework.
Regulations and Compliance
All regulations will be made under the PECA Act 2016, PEMRA Ordinance 2002, and PTA Act 1996. Under the framework, all stakeholders and companies will have to operate under local laws. In case of approval of the framework, all platforms will have to register or obtain a license from the authority within 12 months.
