Punjab’s interim Minister of Transportation, Ibrahim Hassan, has revealed an ambitious proposal to introduce electric bicycles following the successful implementation of electric rickshaws.
This strategic move aligns with the government’s dedication to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation, with a specific focus on encouraging the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Minister Hassan emphasized that the transportation sector significantly contributes to smog in Punjab, and the introduction of electric bikes serves as a targeted initiative to tackle and alleviate this environmental challenge.
Underlining the government’s proactive stance, Hassan unveiled plans to distribute a substantial number of electric bikes, aiming to provide at least 200,000 units to students at discounted rates. This initiative not only motivates the younger demographic to embrace eco-friendly transportation but also addresses the concern of affordability, ensuring that electric bikes are within reach for a broader segment of the population.
In addition to the distribution strategy, the minister stressed the establishment of a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure throughout the province. This underscores a holistic approach, recognizing that the success of electric vehicles relies on a supportive ecosystem that includes easily accessible charging stations.
The collaboration between the Bank of Punjab and the government further strengthens the viability of this initiative. The financing scheme, specifically tailored for students, offers them the opportunity to acquire electric motorcycles through easy installments over a two-year period. Notably, the minimal interest rate of six percent makes this financing option not only accessible but also financially feasible for students, thereby encouraging the widespread adoption of EVs.
