Exciting developments are underway as reports suggest that renowned Pakistani batsman Babar Azam is poised to reassume the role of captain for the Pakistan cricket team, sparking a resurgence in discussions surrounding the “Babar Azam Captaincy.” Sources indicate that Mohsin Naqvi, the newly elected chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is set to appoint Babar Azam as the team’s captain.
Earlier today, Mohsin Naqvi, previously the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, officially assumed the position of PCB Chairman without facing any competition in the elections. His tenure as chairman will span the next three years, potentially ushering in changes for Pakistan cricket.
The election unfolded at the National Cricket Academy, marking Mohsin Naqvi as the 37th Chairman of the PCB. In a twist of events, Babar Azam had stepped down from the captaincy last year across all formats following a disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup.
The national team finished in 5th place, failing to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Subsequent to Babar’s resignation, the PCB appointed Shaheen Afridi as the captain for T20Is, while Shan Masood took on the role of Test captain. Their inaugural series at thehelm proved challenging, with the Green Shirts recently experiencing a 4-1 defeat in a T20I series against New Zealand. Prior to that, they suffered a 3-0 loss in a Test series against Australia.
