JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Authorities are conducting a death investigation after a man discovered a human skull while fishing near the Little Conemaugh River in Conemaugh Township, Cambria County, on Thursday evening.
Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees reported that the skull was located around 8 p.m. in a secluded part of the township.
“A fisherman spotted what appeared to be a skull and immediately alerted emergency services,” Lees stated.

Coroner Lees is collaborating with forensic anthropologist Dennis Dirkmaat from Mercyhurst University in Erie and forensic dentist Michael Rice from Westmont to identify the remains.
Dirkmaat heads the applied forensic sciences department at Mercyhurst.
“This investigation is currently active,” said Lees.
District Attorney Gregory Neugebauer confirmed that local police and fire departments were present at the scene.
As of 2 p.m. Friday, the cause and manner of death had not been determined, Lees added.
